Medical Survival Considerations

Basic medical knowledge and supplies are essential in a crisis. Caring for injured members of your party must be considered before implementing the rest of your survival plan. Addressing life threatening conditions is your first priority. Once you have resolved immediate concerns you can begin taking care of the survival essentials. More advanced  care will have to wait until the essentials are secured.

Survival Medical Training

Obtaining the appropriate level of training is the first step in creating a sound medical survival plan. Basic training classes are often taught at community colleges, YMCAs, hospitals and medical clinics. Minimum basic medical training should include:

  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Adults, children and infants
  • Basic First Aid

More advanced training such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic courses are offered at universities, teaching hospitals or technical schools.

Assembling Medical Kits

Kits range from basic field  (first aid) kits to advanced trauma kits. Basic first aid kits typically contain the necessary supplies to treat minor injuries and illness such as cuts, scrapes, sprains, low-grade fevers, minor headaches, etc.

Advanced trauma kits should contain items that will allow trained medical personnel to treat more traumatic injuries such as severe bleeding, bone fractures, stab or gunshot wounds, etc.

Advanced Medical Training for Long-term Survival

After you have obtained basic training and assembled field first aid kits, begin building more advanced trauma kits for your vehicles, home and retreat. Advanced kits should contain supplies that allow you treat more traumatic injuries. Survival Tactics NOW! recommends that your advanced kit contain items that can be used by trained medical personnel to treat patients in the absence of their own equipment.

CAUTION: Do not to exceed your level of training if you choose to assemble advanced treatment kits as a part of your medical survival plan.
